It stretches from Roxy Square, passing by Al-Ittihadiya Palace, then curves to intersect with Thawra Street, continuing on Omar Ibn Al-Khattab Street until it reaches the walls of Almaza Airport at Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq Street.
Sayed Ali El-Merghany (1873-1968) was a prominent Sudanese political and religious leader and a member of the El-Merghani family, which is well-known in Egypt, Sudan, and Eritrea for its contributions to Islamic studies and the propagation of Islam. He was raised in Massawei Island in northern Sudan and later studied Islamic sciences under his uncle, Taj El-Sir El-Merghani. He graduated from Al-Azhar University in Cairo with a degree in Islamic law.
Sayed Ali El-Merghany led a Sudanese delegation to Britain to negotiate Sudan’s future and advocated for Sudan’s Arab and Islamic affiliation, and for its independence from foreign colonial powers. He was also an advocate for education and founded the first Sudanese newspaper, “Sawt Al-Sudan”.
He maintained strong ties with the Federalists, working closely with President Ismail Al-Azhari and was with him during his trip to Britain. Sayed Ali El-Merghany passed away in 1968 and was buried in his mosque in Khartoum Bahri.
