The Matareya neighborhood in Cairo is one of the famous neighborhoods that carries a long history and rich culture. It belongs to the Cairo Governorate and is located in the eastern Cairo area. The origin of its name goes back to the word “rain” in Latin (Matria), which means mother, in reference to the passage of the Virgin Mary in the area and the presence of a tree dedicated to her.
The Matareya neighborhood is distinguished by its strategic geographical location, as it is bordered to the north by the Tawfiqia Canal, to the south by Cable Street, to the east by the subway railway, and to the west by Port Said Street (Ismailia Canal). The total area of Matariya is about 13.4 square kilometers, and its population density is estimated at about 90,582 people per square kilometer.
The Al-Matariyya neighborhood includes several residential squares that are distinguished by their diversity and varied topography, such as the first residential square, which includes the Al-Azab sheikhdom, the second residential square, which includes the Al-Matariyya Al-Gharbiya sheikhdom, in addition to the third and fourth residential squares, which include multiple sheikhates, such as Al-Matariyya Al-Qibliyya, Al-Bahriyya, Shajarat Maryam, and Ain Shams Al-Gharbiya.
Matareya is distinguished by the presence of many cultural and historical monuments, such as the Obelisk of King Senusret I, known as the “Mataria Obelisk”, which is the only remaining relic of the ancient city of Heliopolis. Matareya also includes a mosque, Al-Nour Al-Mohammadi Hospital, Matareya General Hospital, and the Faculty of Engineering in Matareya.
In addition, Matariya is famous for its well and the Mary Tree, which are considered sacred by many people and constitute a place of visit and worship. With its location, rich history, and cultural and social diversity, the Matareya neighborhood is considered one of the prominent neighborhoods in Cairo that attracts residents and visitors of all ages and backgrounds.
